Lutgen, Marcano garner 2017 Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division II weekly national awards

LOUISVILLE, Ky. –  Rookies,Missouri Southern’s Erika Lutgen and Flagler’s Ally Marcano, took home this week’s Louisville Slugger / NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Week awards, respectively. Lutgen and Marcano earned the honor for their outstanding play for games played Feb. 13-19, announced the Association on Wednesday afternoon.

Highlighted by conference and school-record performances, Lutgen finished her weekend at the Arkansas-Monticello 8 State Classic with a .526 batting average, 14 RBI, four home runs, a 1.158 slugging percentage and a .571 on-base percentage. Additionally, the first baseman was flawless in the field, playing errorless softball in 48 attempts. In Lutgen’s third game of the weekend, she accounted for 10 of the Lions’ 11 runs by launching a program-record three home runs and recording a Mid-American Athletic Association (MIAA)-record 10 RBI against Illinois-Springfield. The MIAA Hitter of the Week also went 2-for-4 with an RBI in a upset win over then-No. 5 Southern Arkansas.

Marcano, also named Peach Belt Pitcher of the Week, posted a 3-0 record with a 0.30 ERA and 39 strikeouts in 23 innings. The freshman southpaw from Middletown, N.Y. held her opponents to a .133 batting average and struck out double figures in all three complete-game victories over Eckerd, Palm Beach Atlantic and Wingate. She opened with a two-hit, 10-strikeout shutout in a mid-week matchup at the Tritons. Returning home, Marcano matched a school record with 15 punchouts against the Sailfish and wrapped up her week by fanning 13 Bulldogs in an eight-inning victory over Wingate.
