Marvel Boss Confirms Chris Evans Wasn’t Originally on List for Captain America Role

Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirms Chris Evans wasn’t originally on Marvel’s list for Captain America, though once the role was offered to Evans, he turned it down twice.

A cover story from The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Marvel began searching for its Captain America in early 2010 (Captain America: The First Avenger began shooting that June after Evans was cast in March), though Evans wasn’t on the initial list. Marvel was “determined to cast an American as Cap,” but Evans wasn’t being considered mostly because he had played the Human Torch in two pre-MCU Fantastic Four films.

“We thought, OK, well, he’s that character. Let’s keep looking,” said Feige . “And as we [continued] not finding people, we went back to the initial lists. And that brought us back to Chris. And I thought, well, Patrick Stewart played Jean-Luc Picard and Charles Xavier. Harrison Ford played Han Solo and Indiana Jones. Who cares?”

Evans was more than hesitant to accept the role. “Getting the offer felt to me like the epitome of temptation. The ultimate job offer, on the biggest scale,” said Evans. “I’m supposed to say no to this thing. It felt like the right thing to do.”

He first passed on a nine-film deal from Marvel, and subsequently turned down a second six-film deal. Even after visiting Marvel Studios, Evans maintained his original position, saying “You see the pictures, and you see the costumes, and it’s cool. But I’d now woken up the day after saying no and felt good, twice.”

Marvel persisted, and following a call from Robert Downey Jr. and consulting with various close friends, Evans accepted the role. He’s since played Captain America in non-cameo appearances in seven different MCU films: Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers: Endgame.

In the same cover story, when discussing Evans’ penchant for holding the MCU together, Downey Jr. said “[Evans’] suspension of his own disbelief, regardless of whatever doubts he had, is the reason all these other worlds are able to be built. Starting with Avengers, and then Guardians, and Black Panther. People love to say — and I’ll eat it up — that I’m kind of the progenitor of this whole universe. But if you want to talk about it in terms of team building, and you want to talk about it as the most successful creative relay race in the history of cinema, he was the critical leg.”

It appears Evans’ run as Captain America will come to a close following Endgame, as he revealed in March 2018 that he intends for the film to be his last MCU movie, and in October 2018, following principal photography on Endgame, gave an emotional look back at his eight years as the character. However, Endgame co-director Joe Russo said in November 2018 that Evans “isn’t done” playing Captain America.

Avengers: Endgame will be released on April 26, 2019 in the United States, April 25 in the UK and April 24 in Australia.
