Reports Of Explosion Prompt Lockdown At Kenilworth Junior High School

PETALUMA, CA — A lockdown at Kenilworth Junior High School in Petaluma continued Wednesday afternoon after police responded to reports of an explosion at the campus.

The initial reports came just before noon Wednesday. There were no known injuries, the Petaluma Police Department said.

Officers descended on the campus at 800 Riesling Road and placed the school on lockdown.

“At this time fireworks have been located and a large public safety response in the area,” the Petaluma Police Department said in a Nixle alert. “Please avoid this area and shelter in place until further notice.”

In a follow-up message at 12:19 p.m., police urged the public to remain out of the area as a secondary search was conducted for fireworks.

Police said an initial search was completed and only fireworks were indicated in an isolated area on campus. Police were conducting a secondary search and said there was still no word of any injuries.

The school remained on lockdown as police worked with school administrators for further parent notification and information.

“Please avoid this area and shelter in place until further notice.”
