Moët Hennessy Wants To Plant a 'Tiny Forest' In Beverly Hills

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — With a portfolio that includes some of the best-known wines and spirits in the world, Moët Hennessy knows a thing or two about agriculture. That’s why it wants to help Beverly Hills create a “tiny forest” as part of its sustainability initiatives.

The company has proposed the creation of a native-oak forest just south of Greystone Mansion. The project fits into the city’s tree canopy improvement goals outlined in its 2022 Urban Forestry Management Plan, according to city officials.

If the plan is approved by the city, Moët Hennessy wants to showcase the project at the upcoming second installment of its World Living Soils Forum, according to the proposal.

The forum, first convened in 2022, brought together experts with to discuss soil protection and regeneration in an effort to accelerate the transition to more sustainable viticulture — the bread and butter of the company that produces Hennessy cognac and Veuve Clicquot champagne.

“As the city seeks to improve canopy coverage at this time, the open areas at Greystone Mansion offer a prime setting for the establishment of an oak woodland that can restore the native species that covered the hillsides of the area prior to the development of the area,” City Arborist Ken Pfalzgraf wrote in a report.

The area, along with several sloped areas of the Greystone property, was planted with blue gum eucalyptus as part of its original landscaping. But those eucalyptus are undesirable for the high-severity fire zone on the city’s north side and frequently uproot and shed large limbs as they age, according to Pfalzgraf.

Many of the trees planted on the slopes have been removed as they’ve uprooted and fuel hillside instability concerns, he said.

City officials previously considered a project to replace the eucalyptus with oak, but the project stalled due to lack of funding, according to Pfalzgraf.

The proposed tiny forest would cover 1,500 to 3,300 square feet south of the mansion. The plan considers drought resistence, carbon offsetting, fire safety, canopy creation and aesthetics, according to Moët Hennessy’s proposal.

The plan also calls for the removal of invasive grasses and eucalyptus stumps.

The entire process would be documented and shared with the world by the company, which would also cover costs including the planting, according to the proposal.

Both the company and city arborist say the forest could serve as a destination to showcase sustainable planting practices for the Southern California region.

The Recreation and Parks Commission is set to discuss the proposal at its March 26 meeting. If advanced, the City Council would consider it at a future date.
