WARETOWN, NJ — Students at Frederic A. Priff Elementary School were lucky enough to receive a visit from a rap legend, who taught them the value of education and the importance of being yourself.
Darryl McDaniels – DMC from the iconic hip-hop group Run-DMC – spoke with Waretown third through sixth graders on March 15.
McDaniels was visiting as the school wrapped up its career exploration week, school counselor Daggi Ball told Patch.
He discussed not only his illustrious rap career, but also being an author (having written a picture book titled “Darryl’s Dream”), running a cookie company and even rap and sang for the students.
His biggest lesson, though, “was the importance of being true to yourself and focusing on a foundation of education, which will lead you to thrive in your unique passions in life,” Ball said.
“These classroom lessons that the students are learning right now are the tools that they can use to shape their future selves,” Ball said.
McDaniels told the children about his love of comic books and how adjectives are what truly shape the characters. He also gave the students an assignment of writing their own rap about who they are and what they hope to be one day.
“This message of hope and the importance of education is a lesson that the students of Frederic Priff Elementary School will remember for years to come,” Ball said.
