SOMERS, NY — Agreeing with what a Pennsylvania rodent said Friday morning, the Hudson Valley’s own weather-chicken predicted spring will be early this year.
For the sixth year in a row, Muscoot Farm’s own Cluxatawney Henrietta determined when spring would arrive with the laying of an egg.
The Friday morning celebration featured kid-friendly activities and treats and a unique way to observe Groundhog Day by relying on one of the county’s own farm animals to predict the weather.
Farm Manager Jonathon Benjamin spoke for Henrietta during the ceremony in the farm’s activity barn, in front of local officials and families who came to see the fruits of the chicken’s labor.
He reached into the crate containing Henrietta and pulled out an egg, which brought cheers from the attendees.
“It is indeed an early spring,” Benjamin said, then holding the chicken who was flapping her wings.
In Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Phil, through his ability to see or not see his shadow, said an early spring is in the offing. Thousands of revelers showed up at Gobbler’s Knob to see the 138th attempt to forecast the change of seasons.
