Over the last few months, it seems like Netflix is on a mission, making multiple announcements about new additions to their anime library from Netflix Originals to classic shows. The list is growing, but let’s break down the top titles coming in 2019 that we are excited for, and we’ll have the rest of list of the anime coming to Netflix this year at the end of the article.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is considered one of the best anime of all-time. A group of teenagers tries to save the world from aliens using massive machines, all the while, struggling to understand themselves after enduring heart-wrenching trauma and tragedy. This story miraculously combines Kaiju, Mecha, and psychological thriller with action-packed, dramatic moments. And if you don’t like the ending of the 26-episode series (don’t worry), Netlifx will also have the films The End of Evangelion & Evangelion: Death (True) 2. Netflix is making a statement grabbing this huge classic IP by finally making it accessible for streaming (You don’t even want to know how expensive the DVD box set is).
The interesting thing about Cannon Busters is that it’s actually based off of an American comic book, not a Japanese manga, and the animated adaptation idea started off on Kickstarter in 2014 and was eventually taken on by Studio Satelight. The 12 episode series was supposed to air in early March on Netflix, but its release has been delayed for unspecified reasons. Regardless, it’s one we are excited to see! Showcasing a predominantly black cast, it follows the misadventures of a high-end droid, a discarded robot, and a deadly fugitive. We’re getting some serious Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo vibes.
The Giant of Light brought peace and prosperity to Earth after defending it from monsters and alien invasions long ago, but the world faces perils again, and a new hero who has inherited Ultraman’s power will rise up. The animation is full 3DCG, which hasn’t been a popular choice with anime fans. However, the reboot of this classic hero definitely has potential. We’ll see if this series can recover the old magic from the 60s and if this new Ultraman can capture this generation’s hearts.
Bizarre colors. Bizarrely buff. The Joestar family has seen some bizarre stuff! Each generation, one of the males in the family gets the nickname JoJo (Jonathan Joestar, Joseph Joestar, you get it). And these JoJos can’t stay out of trouble. Constantly finding themselves going head to head with ferocious, supernatural, creepy creatures, entrapped in some (dare we say) bizarre adventures. The manga was created in the late 80s and the anime adaptation is still going strong. If you thought John Wick was heavy when it came to dogs, I won’t even tell you what happens to Danny, it will break you. You can check out Season 1 now on Netflix, and if you’re really hooked, then all 5 of the seasons are currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
A trailer for 7 Seeds recently dropped, and while it was supposed to come out in March, it’s release has been delayed. Regardless, the plot focuses on groups of kids who are cryogenically frozen after some scientists predict that humanity will be destroyed by incoming meteorites. These kids wake up and it is not the world they’re used to, to say the least. In the manga, there’s apparently giant insects and carnivorous rats. Sounds like an interesting addition to the ever-popular post-apocalyptic genre, but we’re ready to see more.
Metal music and bloody battles, in Kengan Ashura, gladiators fight in brutal Kengan matches, and the results determine mega-business deals, as major companies bet on their combatants’ success. Netflix released Baki last year, and fans of that and Crunchyroll’s Megalobox may definitely be attracted to this violent bloodsport anime. In Japan, the shonen manga was a knock-out, we will have to see how the anime does on Netflix.
This is a beloved franchise. The manga and anime were extremely popular in the 80s and still have a loyal following. The story’s protagonist, Seiya and the other Knights of the Zodiac clad in sacred “cloths” protect Earth from Olympian Gods who want to take down their leader, the Greek Goddess Athena. We got some Voltron Vibes with Greek mythology! The CG animation isn’t exactly what we were hoping for, but we’ll have to see if Netflix does this revamp justice.
Revisions isn’t based on a manga, so we don’t have a ton of background here, but it’s airing in Japan right now and will be out this May. High School Student Daisuke Toujima and his friends get sent 300 years into the future and apparently, there are people piloting giant mechs are trying to take down an unknown enemy. Will they prevail? Will they get sent back to the future? Will we like it?
