SAN DIEGO, CA — “Let’s Make a Deal” is perhaps best known for its audience members who dress up in crazy costumes to get host Wayne Brady’s attention, in hopes of getting a chance to compete on the television game show.
Eryn Roberts, who lives in San Diego County, wore a costume that not only got Brady’s attention, but got to spread awareness about a cause that’s close to her heart.
Roberts, 34, of La Mesa donated her kidney to a stranger on July 11, 2017, via direct donation in North Carolina.
She called her costume a “transplant trekker.” The cardboard cutout looked like a T-shirt from the nonprofit Transplant Trekkers and had information about living organ donation. The organization hosts virtual treks in an effort to raise awareness about organ donation.
“I am a living example of the wonderful life you can live after donation and how simple it is to give someone else the gift of life,” Roberts told Patch.
She noted that her favorite part of the show was when Brady asked about her costume.
“Normally, costumes for me are a bit more revealing, but I thought being on TV would be the perfect opportunity to talk about living organ donation,” said Roberts, who has lived in the San Diego area for four years, but originally hails from Wilmington, North Carolina. “It wasn’t the easiest outfit to dance in, but it did make a statement.”
Roberts said she is a competitive person who loves game shows. That’s why her mom, an avid watcher of “Let’s Make a Deal,” suggested she apply for the show.
“After filling out an online application, I was asked to do a Zoom interview before being invited to the tapping session,” said Roberts, who works as a project manager for a tech startup.

“I am the type of person who loves seeing how everything works so to experience a game show in person was super exciting,” she said. “I probably just looked shocked and overwhelmed the entire time of filming because it didn’t feel like real life.”
She hopes her appearance helped spread awareness about living organ donation and even inspires some to dress up as lifesaving organs for Halloween.
“I would also welcome any opportunity to talk about living donations or participate in another game show,” Roberts said.
Tune in Monday to CBS to watch Roberts compete on the show.
