SAN DEIGO, CA — Twenty-seven kittens from San Diego were on their way to Portland, Oregon, Thursday morning in an effort to ease the overcrowding at San Diego Humane Society.

The kittens traveled on a flight transport to Oregon Humane Society, with help from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ relocation program.
The San Diego Humane Society’s staff prepared the kittens for take-off and brought them to Alaska Airline’s cargo terminal at San Diego International Airport. ASPCA and its flight manager loaded the kittens onto the plane and flew to Portland, where they will be welcomed by staff at Oregon Humane Society.
“We are extremely grateful to the ASPCA for arranging this transport and to Oregon Humane Society for welcoming in these kittens into their care and getting them ready for adoption,” San Diego Humane Society spokesperson Nina Thompson said.
The kittens, all between 8 to 10 weeks old, came in as strays to San Diego Humane Society. No one came forward to claim them, Thompson said.
The transport helped ease the overcrowding at San Diego Humane Society, which currently has 2,502 animals in care, Thompson said. The organization is at 143 percent capacity for cats and 173 percent capacity for dogs.
Some of the kittens still need spay or neuter surgeries in Portland, so the transport also alleviated pressure on San Diego Humane Society’s medical team, Thompson said.
“We’re at a critical point at our shelter locations,” Thompson told Patch. “If you’ve thought about adopting a pet, now is the time. If you can foster or have time to volunteer, we need you. There are more animals who rely on us than ever before.”
San Diego Humane Society is open for walk-in adoptions from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday at its campuses in El Cajon, Escondido, Oceanside and San Diego.
