What Is Redevelopment 2.0? East Brunswick Mayor Talks Upcoming Plans

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ — The township and mayor are working hard to attract businesses to East Brunswick.

And during his recent online presentation titled Redevelopment 2.0, Mayor Brad Cohen spoke about his vision for the future.

According to Cohen, Central Jersey and the township has a lot of potential to see growth in the coming years.

With a good school system, higher education opportunities, diversity, recreational activities and high quality of life, East Brunswick is perfectly poised to welcome many multinational companies to town, Cohen said. And while they might not be the size of retail giant Amazon, there are thousands of smaller companies that Cohen would love to welcome to town.

In Redevelopment 1.0, the township worked to remove blighted property, helped the township to meet court mandated affordable housing obligation and allowed the township to think creatively what a 21st century Route 18 corridor would like.

In Redevelopment 2.0, the township will focus on projects aimed at the NJ workforce. “If you look at the professional workforce in town is primarily composed of people working in IT, financial, healthcare, education and biotech. We are teeming with people that already have that talent. Do not underestimate how important it is for companies to make sure that their workforce is relatively easy to find,” Cohen explained. “It saves them an incredible amount of money.”

Under Redevelopment 2.0, the township will also focus on recreational services like parks, ice skating rinks, indoor adventure experiences and more. “Route 18 is becoming more of a recreational corridor,” Cohen said.

The mayor noted that East Brunswick has a large amount of housing stock as well. “We have so many different options and price points for people to find here,” Cohen said.

Township officials recently met with Middlesex County to talk about East Brunswick’s parking decks which could accommodate future growth in New Brunswick Downtown which has a dearth of parking spots. The County will shuttle people from the parking decks to downtown New Brunswick.

The developer of the upcoming Vermella East Brunswick has announced he will have shuttles taking residents to either the East Brunswick bus station or the train station in New Brunswick.

This announcement gave Cohen the opportunity to think on a “grander scale.” The mayor said the town could explore the possibility of collaborating with the County, New Brunswick and the new housing projects to develop a shuttle system. This could also help reduce traffic on the road during peak hours.

East Brunswick will also benefit from the township’s Sister City programs, Cohen said. East Brunswick already has sister cities in China and Israel and is planning one in India soon.

The idea behind it is to look to make connection with industries from these countries who are looking “desperately” to find a U.S. base of operations, Cohen said.

“The largest workforce in the world is still the U.S. middle class,” Cohen said. “We want to be the place that people consider for a U.S. base of operation.”
