Mayor of Paris previously made “agreement in principle” over Parc des Princes sale in 2020

According to Le Parisien the mayor of Paris previously made an “agreement in principle” in 2020 for the sale of Paris Saint-Germain’s stadium, the Parc des Princes, to the club’s owners QSI. The outlet also reveal that even former president and PSG fan Nicolas Sarkozy was involved in lobbying for the move, with the now-former CEO Jean-Claude Blanc being involved in the project “up until his departure”.

Discussions were reportedly opened between PSG president and Socialist Party Mayor Anne Hidalgo in October 2015. As already stated an “agreement in principle” was reportedly found before Hidalgo’s re-election in 2022. However, faced with the prospect of a high amount of communist and ecologist party elected representatives in the new Paris Council who would be against the sale, she approached members of the opposition to vote, notably Rachida Dati of the Republican party.

Le Parisien also report that a sale of the Parc des Princes has for a long time been the most preferable situation for the Mayor, but that a breakdown in the relationship between the city’s administrators and the club have somewhat led to the current disaccord between the two parties. Paris City Council’s refusal to show the 2022 Qatar World Cup on big screens reportedly angered Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, with the club’s €40m bid for their stadium coming as an insult to City officials in the other direction.
